Weighing It Up

Pros and Cons

A balanced view of what this visa offers and where its limits lie.

Advantages

  • 189 grants direct PR with no sponsorship or location restriction
  • 190 / 491 open doors when 189 invitations are out of reach
  • 491 + 191 is a reliable regional pathway to PR for many applicants
  • Skilled migration brings the whole family along with full rights

  • Highly competitive — popular occupations often need 85–95 points despite the 65 minimum
  • Skills assessment fees and timelines vary widely by occupation
  • Occupation lists and state nomination quotas change regularly
  • 491 requires 3+ years of regional residence and qualifying income before 191
  • Age penalties begin at 33 and worsen at 40
  • English level (IELTS 7+ or 8+) makes a major difference to your score

FAQ

Common Questions

The questions we hear most often. Need more detail? Book a consultation.

What is the minimum score I need to apply?

65 points is the legislated minimum to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI). However, popular occupations like Accountants, Software Engineers, and Civil Engineers typically need 85–95+ points to be invited. We benchmark you against current invitation rounds in your consultation.

Which occupations are eligible?

Your occupation must be on the relevant Skilled Occupation List for your visa — MLTSSL (for 189), STSOL or ROL (for 190 / 491). Lists change periodically. We check your specific ANZSCO and confirm eligibility before any commitment.

How long does it take from EOI to visa grant?

Highly variable. Invitation can take weeks to many months depending on points score and occupation demand. Once invited, application processing is typically 6–14 months. Faster for high-demand, high-score profiles.

Do 491 holders really get permanent residency?

Yes — via the Subclass 191 once you have lived in a designated regional area for 3 years and met the qualifying income threshold. The 491 → 191 pathway is well-established.

Can my partner contribute points?

Yes. Skilled partner with English and skills assessment can add 10 points; partner with Competent English only adds 5. Partner who is an Australian citizen / PR also adds 10 points.

What if my occupation isn't on the skilled list?

Skilled migration may not be your best route. Alternatives include employer sponsorship (482/186), partner visas, business / investor visas, or in some cases a closely related ANZSCO. We assess all options in the consultation.
