Weighing It Up

Pros and Cons

A balanced view of what this visa offers and where its limits lie.

Advantages

  • Direct route to permanent residency via 186 or transition from 482
  • Full work and residency rights for the entire family
  • 186 grants immediate permanent residence and Medicare access
  • Recognised pathway even if you don't qualify for skilled migration directly
  • No upper age limit for 482 (186 has age 45 limit, with exemptions)

! Things to Consider

  • Visa is tied to your sponsoring employer — losing the job risks the visa
  • Employer must be approved as a Standard Business Sponsor (SBS) and meet ongoing obligations
  • Salary must meet the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT)
  • Restricted to your nominated occupation
  • Some 482 streams have a 4-year cap with no PR pathway
  • Long, multi-stage process: sponsorship + nomination + visa
The Three Subclasses

Pick the Right Sponsorship Pathway

FAQ

Common Questions

The questions we hear most often. Need more detail? Book a consultation.

Can I change employers on a 482 visa?

Yes, but the new employer must be an approved Standard Business Sponsor and lodge a new nomination for you. You generally have 60 days from leaving one employer to find a new one before your visa is at risk.

Do I have to start with 482 before applying for 186?

Not always. The Direct Entry stream of the 186 is open to skilled workers nominated by an approved employer without prior 482 service. The Temporary Residence Transition stream requires you to have worked on a 482 for the qualifying period.

What is the TSMIT?

The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold is the minimum annual salary your nominated role must pay (currently AUD $73,150 plus annual indexation). Your actual salary must also be at the market rate for the position.

Can I bring my family on a 482 visa?

Yes. Your spouse and dependent children can be included as secondary applicants with full work and study rights.

How long does the whole process take?

From sponsorship application to visa grant, typically 4–9 months end-to-end — depending on whether the employer is already an approved SBS, occupation list, and Department workloads.

What if my employer withdraws sponsorship after I'm granted?

You generally have 60 days to find a new sponsor and have a new nomination lodged. Beyond that, your visa may be cancelled. We can guide you on next steps if this happens.
